The Streets Of London
— 2nd October 2002
Tom plasticbag talks us through his journey to work via BBC webcams and it makes me think - how glamorous sounding London place names are. Something which living in Leeds I’m not faced with very often at all really.
I know why it is. It’s to do with the production of culture. It’s a self perpetuating spiral of more people living and working in a place and inevitably producing more culture, which therefore attracts more culture producing people. The place names are bound to get mentioned at some point along the way and that just adds to the allure of the place, attracting more culture producers and making the whole thing ... more. The same thing happens in places like New York - but very definitely doesn’t happen in Leeds.
I’m not saying that I’d prefer to live in a place like London, or that I really believe that living there adds any real glamour to the people, sitting on buses or trains, working in offices, eating McDonalds plastic breakfasts. It just interests me how these things happen, how they can build momentum and whether it’s a process that once started could possibly ever change.
There again maybe I am saying I’d like to live in a place like that. Not for the glamour so much as for the history. Maybe there is something inspirational to walk in the same streets where famous people have done famous things. Whether you want to emulate them or not.
